The ISLANDER project is helping to establish an energy community on the island of Borkum, empowering local citizens to actively participate in the island's energy transition. Initial workshops introduced the concept and benefits of an energy community, and sparked interest among residents. Following these workshops, a small group of committed citizens began to develop initial project ideas. Read more about the progress.

Vitoria-Gasteiz, March 4-5, 2024 – At the beginning of March, the ISLANDER project partners gathered in Vitoria-Gasteiz for their bi-annual consortium meeting. Hosted by project partner Cegasa, the meeting served as a platform to update partners on the progress of the different work packages and to discuss open issues. This was particularly important in view of the upcoming milestones, the completion of the installations on Borkum.

With the successful hosting of the second Citizen Engagement Workshop on 10 February 2024, the ISLANDER project supports the citizens of Borkum in their participation in the energy transition of the island. The aim of the workshop was to lay the foundations for the establishment of an energy community on the island.

On Saturday, 4 November 2023, the first Citizen Engagement Workshop for establishing an Energy Community took place on the North Sea island of Borkum. 28 committed Borkum citizens took part in the event to learn more about the benefits and legal framework surrounding Energy Communities. In future workshops, the ISLANDER project will support interested citizens in the process of setting up an energy community.

During the Borkum Energy Days, held on September 15th and 16th, the ISLANDER project partners of the Stadtwerke Borkum introduced an upcoming Citizen Engagement Workshop on November 4th, 2023. The Workshop aims at informing residents about the benefits of forming an energy community to empower citizens to actively participate in shaping the energy transition on Borkum.

The Clean energy for EU islands secretariat launched a Call for Applications for 30 renewable islands by 2030. The primary objective of this call is to identify and support 30 islands or groups of islands over the next three years, enabling them to achieve complete energy independence through 100% renewable sources by 2030.

The Replication Board on EU islands Decarbonisation, organised by GIFT in collaboration with nine other projects, convened on June 6th 2023 to delve into the critical topic of decarbonisation and its implications for European islands. The board provided a platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration, highlighting the challenges and opportunities in achieving a sustainable energy mix for EU islands.

Our project partner IDENER presented the ISLANDER project and talked about the role of hydrogen in decarbonising Borkum.
