IDENER R&D is a recently created spin-off of IDENER that will centralise the R&D activities, thus forming the IDENER group. IDENER R&D investigates in the multidisciplinary field of Computational Science and its application to the optimization of systems and processes in key areas: Industrial Technologies; ICTs; Biotechnology; Energy; and Resource and Raw Materials Efficiency. This approach results in a high added value which sharpens the competitive edge of complex systems by provi- ding improvements in performance and cost-effectiveness. To
that end, IDENER integrates concepts from four interrelated and complementary areas: Mathematical Modelling and Simu- lation; Multidisciplinary Design Optimization; Control Enginee- ring; and Software Engineering. The IDENER group has extensi- ve experience in international R&D projects, having coordinated and/or participated in more than 25 projects funded under European public research programmes (FP7 and H2020) and in several private actions since 2010.
Under ISLANDER, IDENER R&D will be leading the ‚Large-sca-
le deployment of the DER+HES solutions‘, specifically with the deployment of the H2-based storage system on the island of Borkum, and the design and deployment of the RESS household solutions, also supporting the integration of the household/buil- ding DER+HES solutions. Additionally, IDENER R&D contributes to the development of an open tool for optimised grid design in WP5 and to the demonstration and testing activities of the system to be deployed on Borkum. It also participates in the feasibility study on the full decarbonisation of the island. Finally, IDENER R&D will participate actively in the exploration strategy, and in the dissemination and communication activities.

The Spanish company CEGASA was founded in 1934 and designs and manufactures electrochemical energy storage, namely Lithium-Ion solutions (industrial mobility, last mile, urban services, stationary “behind the meter” systems) and primary Zn-air industrial batteries.
The batteries are available in different formats and cover different energy ranges. CEGASA has own laboratories, where the batteries are designed, tested and validated by a team of professionals with more than 20 years of experience.
CEGASA oversees the deployment of 3 types of Lithium-Ion solutions: a grid level storage battery of 1 MWh, 30 smaller batteries to be installed in households and 3 batteries in public buildings. CEGASA participates in the development of an integration and operation test plan and in the demonstration of the energy assets and contributes to the development of maintenance procedures.

DAFNI – Network of Sustainable Greek Islands is a non-profit organization of island local and regional authorities founded in 2006. DAFNI supports the sustainable development of Greek islands being involved in advocacy and policy development on local, national and EU level and the implementation of innovative projects on islands. Today it counts 53 members, of which 49 island municipalities and 4 Regional authorities. It is a founding member of the Pact of Islands Ιnitiative, coordinator of the Smart Islands Initiative, and a collaborating body of the Covenant of Mayors Office and the Clean Energy for EU Islands Secretariat.
DAFNI participates in the replication activities. It supports the development of a replication plan for the two Greek islands of Skopelos and Lefkada and contributes to the assessment of the replication potential of the project results in Ionian and Sporades Greek archipelagos. As part of the communication and dissemination activities, DAFNI shares key results with its network of EU islands.

EMEC is the world’s only accredited wave and tidal test centre for marine renewable energy, suitable for testing multiple grid-connected devices simultaneously through pre-consented and cost-minimising test and demonstration facilities. EMEC’s wider energy activities also focuses on green hydrogen, battery storage, integrated energy systems as well as international consultancy activity and research services. EMEC has lead on various EU funded projects including BIGHIT, OCTARRAY and InToTidal.
EMEC oversees the replication activities aiming at replicating the results to the widest possible adopters targeting follower islands and archipelagos. EMEC is also involved in technical tasks such as the deployment of hydrogen-based storage and big data management. Additionally EMEC contributes to the drafting of guidelines on gender dimension and supports the communication and dissemination of results towards stakeholders of EU islands.

AYESA group is a company based on three pillars: Engineering, Technology and Consultancy. One of the company expertise’s is the deployment of smart energy grids including hardware and software components. Ayesa is a common contractor of main energy utilities, participating in the execution and management of projects that unify multidisciplinary technology for value-added developments such as design tools, planning, simulation and artificial intelligence applied to the operation of energy assets.
AYESA is the coordinator of the project and the main responsible for the development of the smart IT platform to operate energy assets in the project pilot. AYESA is involved in the deployment of the EV charging stations and leads several activities such the development of the design of the energy system, the digitalisation of the energy system and the development of a Smart IT platform for the provision of high flexibility services.

The Behavioural Engineering Research Group (BEE) at the FEB KU Leuven studies human decision making and behavior in an economic environment from an interdisciplinary angle (economics, marketing, psychology, philosophy, medical sciences, and biology). BEE studies both decision making, behavior, and underlying mechanisms. BEE’s goal is to stimulate and support decision makers in making welfare enhancing decisions, inspire policy makers to design policy in support of such decisions, and as such contribute to a better society.
The KU Leuven’s line of action is on one hand to gather data on the existing islands’ energy consumption. This data constitutes the baseline for an Individual Energy Demand Forecast model. On the other hand, KU Leuven works on finding an approach to motivate consumers in reducing their energy consumption. Their overall task is to integrate human behaviour and socio-economic dimensions into the project.
