Borkum, April 1-2 — The ISLANDER project partners gathered in Borkum for their bi-annual consortium meeting. Hosted by Borkum Nordseeheilbad, the meeting served as a platform to update partners on the progress of various work packages and discuss open issues. This was particularly important in view of the upcoming milestone in finalization of the demonstration technologies installations.
The project partners were welcomed to Borkum with gentle winds and great weather to kick off the meeting full speed at Borkum’s Kulturinsel. The latter part of the day was filled with viewing of the latest installations on Borkum as part of ISLANDER, giving the chance for technical discussions between partners. The day was closed with a consortial dinner of German cuisine along one of Borkum’s beautiful beaches.
The day of the site visits began with a short introduction of the project for the external stakeholders attending for the day. It provided an overarching view on Borkum’s energy transition ambitions and strategy, followed by how the ISLANDER project supports Borkum in achieving these goals.
This was followed by a session from the follower islands in Croatia, Scotland, and Greece on how they plan to replicate the innovative technologies on their own islands. This provided insight on the applicability of the ISLANDER solution deployed on Borkum on other islands with different needs and circumstances.
The highlight of this day was the site visits in the afternoon. Riding in a historical bus, we were guided around the island to view the different technologies by Olaf Look, leading the pilot deployments on Borkum. During the visit were stops at:
The visit gave participants a chance to view the technologies up close, gathering insights on the technicalities of the systems.
The external experts and stakeholders left feeling inspired by the installations in Borkum, and were eager to take their learnings to replicate the success on Borkum in their own projects. Such a visit to the demo sites are always valuable in disseminating the successes of the project and to invite others with similar ambitions to learn from the project.
As the end of the project draws near, the consortium is gearing up steadily towards the finalisation of their work and completion of the installations.
